Bundles of trust? Examining the relationships between media repertoires, institutional trust, and social contexts

Abstract How the media influence trust that citizens have in institutions such as politics and science seems more important than ever, given decline of institutional Western societies, increasingly diversified landscape. This paper focuses on relationship between repertoires, trust, two socializing contexts (parents, social networks). Applying Latent Class Analysis, this examines (a) how parental socialization networks predict membership (b) repertoires are associated with levels trust. Outcomes reveal five distinct among which emerging type cross-media news consumers. Membership is both networks. There clear differences repertoires: Popular omnivores quality consumers most trust; non-print-oriented least.
